Portland’s Murder Mystery Team Building Adventure

It’s not all work and no play at Portland Training! On one particular sunny Friday in July, we were invited to participate in a team-building event. Work drew to a close in the early afternoon, and everyone from all corners of the business were whisked away to Sheffield City Centre, where someone had committed a grizzly murder!

We split off into random teams and following an interactive app on our mobile phones, we had to work through a series of clues, in a race against our co-workers to solve the mystery of the ‘Murder on the Don’.

*ping* comes the first clue. A Victorian rhyme about a place that goes squawk and ribbit. Each team figured out soon enough that this was local pub ‘Frog and Parrot’ and we all got the flavour of the game. The next two hours involved a lot of walking, laughing and head-scratching. We tromped all the way around the city centre, like pigs hunting for truffles, starting from Devonshire Green, working our way through the city centre, down to Kelham island and finishing our hunt at Victoria Quays.

After finally solving the crime and figuring out who the murderer was, the detectives were rewarded with free pizza and ice-cold drinks at a rented-out Craft and Dough! This left plenty of time for the winners to gloat, the losers to lament that the winners cheated, and everyone to agree that actually, it was a great day had by all.

Speaking of the event, Victoria from HR said: “While everyone gets along in the office, we can all agree that it was nice to bring together colleagues from different circles or floors that wouldn’t normally speak with each other as much. It was also lovely to reward everyone a little bit for their hard work. Overall I call it a win”
