What to expect when starting work on a construction site

So you’re going to work on the construction site for the first time. It’s understandable if you’re a little bit nervous. It’s a new environment, and one where shouting and swearing are not uncommon. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to make a good first impression.

  1. Be on Time

This goes for any job, but especially construction sites. Do not be late, especially on your first day.

  1. Pick up rubbish and material cutoffs

Cleaning as you go isn’t only for cooking. It’s also a good idea on site. You’ll make a good impression by using your initiative from the start and helping keep the area clear. Always ask before throwing away any cutoffs though.

  1. Try to keep busy.

Keep your eyes open and see if there’s anything that needs doing. Ask people if they need a hand.

  1. Keep your eyes open

Stay alert to what’s going on around you at all times. Stay out of the way of people operating heavy machinery. Hopefully, they are also paying attention to their surroundings, but the safest thing is to assume they aren’t.

  1. Accept that you will do things wrong.

Yep, you’re gonna mess up, and it will be embarrassing. Pick yourself up and move on. And don’t be afraid to ask questions.

But most of all - Enjoy learning from your new opportunity!
